We describe a collaborative project with Center for Inherited Disease Research (CIDR), and National Institute of Health (NIH), to make available to the scientific community a set of highly informative short tandem repeat (STR) marker set for mouse mapping. The set is comprised of 310 STRS, each labeled in one of three fluorescent dyes, 6FAM™, VIC™, or NED™.
The markers were typed against 47 inbred mouse strains. Primary selection of markers was made to ensure maximum informativeness for the cross C57BL/6J x DBA/2J. Additional markers were selected to increase informativeness for other crosses. The number of informative markers for the C57BL/6J x DBA/2J cross is currently 208 with an average spacing of ~7 cM. The C57BL/6J x Mus spretus (BSS) interspecific backcross panel (JAX) was used to anchor the markers to the existing mouse map and confirm their map order. Information about the marker set is publicly available on the web at:
http://www.cidr.jhmi.edu/mouse/mouse.html
By submitting a pair-wise combination of inbred strains the informative markers for that cross will be returned and sets can be ordered through Applied Biosystems.
