The annotation of mouse genomic sequence is a critical step in deciphering the biology encoded in the mouse genome. Once genes and other functional regions are identified, the focus of annotation changes from the identification of features in the genome to the integration of these features with existing and emerging biological knowledge. This poster outlines some of the current and future annotation for the mouse genome accessible via the Mouse Genome Informatics (MGI) Web Site (http://www.informatics.jax.org) at The Jackson Laboratory. The MGI Web Site supports integrated access to the Mouse Genome Database (MGD), the Gene Expression Database (GXD), and the Mouse Genome Sequence (MGS) projects (see the related poster by Lori E. Corbani).
The complete sequencing of the mouse genome that is currently in progress requires the development of new tools and approaches at MGI. These include the development of: 1) high-throughput curation procedures for gene models predicted in the mouse genome reference sequence, 2) structured and controlled vocabularies (ontologies) for describing gene function, cellular localization, and biological process (see http://www.geneontology.org), 3) new genetic maps based on genomic sequence, and 4) a new data model for sequences to allow the retrieval of defined genomic segments associated with individual genes.
MGD is supported by NIH grant HG00330, GXD is supported by NIH grant HD33745, and MGS is supported by NIH grant HG01559 and DOE contract DE-FG02-99ER62850.
