G9. A PAC Contig Adjacent to the Murine MHC Spanning the Trypanosoma Infection Resistance Locus 1

Trypanosoma congolense, the agent of sleeping sickness in African cattle, causes anaemia, loss of production and death. The wide distribution of these parasites in Africa limits cattle raising to small unproductive but resistant breeds. Different mouse strains also show a range of susceptibilities to T. congolense infection. We have used the mouse model of T. congolense infection to identify five QTL in mice that are associated with the extreme resistant and susceptible phenotypes. These loci have been named Tir1 - Tir5. In the F6 intercross the Tir1 QTL has been localised to a 1.2cM region immediately proximal to the mouse MHC on chromosome 17. A PAC contig, containing approximately 40 STS, across the Tir1 QTL. is presented.
