The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) is an international non-profit academic organisation that forms part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). The EBI is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge next to the Sanger Centre and the Human Genome Mapping Project Resource Centre (HGMP). Together these institutes constitute one of the world's largest concentrations of expertise in genomics and bioinformatics. The EBI covers a wide range of activities in research and services in bioinformatics, including building and maintaining public biological databases of DNA sequences (EMBL-Bank), protein sequences (Trembl/SWISS-PROT), genome annotation (Ensembl) and gene expression data (ArrayExpress). Data resources are complemented by computational analysis and query servers such as SRS for querying over than 150 linked biological datasets. Ensembl (http://www.ensembl.org/) is a joint project with the Sanger Centre aiming to provide automatic annotation on eukaryotic genomes (incl. human and mouse data).
The Genome Monitoring Table (Genome MOT) shows the total amount of finished and unfinished genomic DNA sequences deposited per year into the DDBJ/EMBL/Genbank databases for a number of model organisms (http://www.ebi.ac.uk/genomes/mot/). The Genome MOT reports nearly 74 Mb finished and nearly 373 Mb unfinished mouse DNA (data August 2001). The full range of EBI services is freely available at http://www.ebi.ac.uk
