SWISS-PROT is a curated, non-redundant protein sequence database which provides a high level of annotation and integration with other databases. TrEMBL, its computer-annotated supplement, contains translations of all coding sequences in the EMBL Nucleotide Sequence Database which are not yet in SWISS-PROT. The mouse is one of a number of model organisms which has been selected for priority annotation in SWISS-PROT and this means that new sequences and updates are added to the database quickly and cross-references to the Mouse Genome Database (MGD) as well as to a wide range of other databases are provided to allow users to access additional information. SWISS-PROT currently contains 4491 mouse entries with 4078 cross-references to MGD while TrEMBL contains 16611 mouse entries with 12243 MGD cross-references. A number of recent developments have taken place in the SWISS-PROT database with regard to the mouse including the production of a non-redundant mouse proteome set with comprehensive statistical and comparative analysis.
