RIKEN BioResource Center (BRC) is a non-profit organization established in January 2001. The aim of BRC is to collect and produce mouse resources as well as plant, cell, DNA resources for serving them to the scientific community. In order to get the basic information and make a standard database for the quality control of mouse resources, we plan to characterize major mouse strains at the levels of genomics, proteomics and glycomics. This project is focused on germline cells, such as ES cells, EG cells and spermatozoa, and also on embryos at early developmental stages. In this paper we took three approaches for the profiling of gene expression in ES cells: 1) Affimetrix murine genome U74 set oligo chip analysis, 2)NIA 15K mouse cDNA clone set microarray, 3) cDNA subtraction (SSH method). We obtained the information of the genes highly expressed in some strains but not in the other strains, and analyzed them by RT-PCR and in situ hybridization. These data will contribute to the Mouse Phenome Project.
