Microarray analysis allows the screening of thousands of identifiable genes in a single experiment. The challenge of this approach is to combine new technology with established genetic tools to associate genes with specific biological function. Imprinted genes are expressed either from the maternal or the paternal allele of a gene but not both. We have designed a screen to identify imprinted genes from mice with uniparental duplications of proximal Chrs. 7 and 11 using microarray analysis. Since imprinted genes play important roles in embryonic growth and development, identifying novel ones is of interest. Tissue specific probes from mice with uniparental duplications of proximal Chrs. 7 and 11 have been used to query microarrays. All of the known imprinted genes from Chrs. 7 and 11 present on the microarray score in the top 20 "best hit" clones and we have identified a collection of novel imprinted genes and candidate imprinted transcripts from a variety of different tissues. Detailed analyses of these novel imprinted genes are underway.
