The Mary Lyon Centre (MLC) is a proposed state-of-the-art, centralised facility for mouse genetic studies on the MRC Harwell campus.

To support the MLC, a team within the MRC Harwell Informatics Group is implementing a relational database schema to incorporate all facets of contemporary animal-facility research and administration.  This schema will be implemented on a standard relational database management system (RDBMS) as a single web-based application.

The software will be designed to encompass stability, security, efficiency, accuracy and ease of use to provide an environment where animal husbandry and experimental data is accessible alongside facility management data and Home Office procedures.

- Data storage - the system will be based around a commercial, industrial-strength RDBMS, Sybase, on a central server.

- Data capture - up to two hundred client machines located on an Intranet situated in the animal facility, within animal husbandry wards, general laboratories and offices.

- Development technology - will consist of a web-based interface running Java servlets on a centralised server.

- Data types - There will be a huge diversity of data types entered into, and retrieved from, the system.  Data will be entered manually - by means of direct input of data from the user, and automatically - by means of barcode readers, weighing scales and other peripherals.

- Data analysis/reports - tools will be developed
