As comparative sequence analysis between the human and mouse genomes is an attractive tool for genome annotation, a mouse 173 kb region telomeric to the Ifng locus on chromosome 10 was sequenced and compared by various sequence analysis programs to the human homologous sequence located on chromosome 12q15. This region has a low density of genes: one gene was detected in the mouse as well as the human sequences and a second one only in the human sequence. The mouse gene and its human ortholog, which are expressed in the immune system at low level, produce a non-coding mRNA. Surprinsingly, non-expressed sequences show higher degree of conservation than exons in this genomic region. At least three of these conserved sequences are also conserved in a third mammalian species (sheep or cow).
