A ROLE FOR A MOUSE POLYCOMB GROUP GENE IN GENOMIC IMPRINTING

A subset of both the mouse and human genome is expressed from only one allele in a parent of origin specific manner, including the imprinted X chromosome as well as autosomal imprinted loci. Based on recent findings that the mouse polycomb group gene eed acts to maintain repression of the imprinted X chromosome, we investigated whether it is also required for proper regulation of autosomal imprinted loci. Expression analyses revealed that transcripts from the silent alleles of some paternally imprinted genes are present in eed mutant embryos. Maternal and paternal patterns of CpG methylation were also altered at these loci. These data identify EED as a trans-acting factor regulating parent of origin methylation and expression of a subset of autosomal imprinted loci.
