COMPARATIVE PATHOLOGY FOR FUNCTIONAL GENOMICS INITIATIVES

Anatomic and clinical pathology evaluations can be extremely valuable in the characterization of mutant mice and in the development of valid mutant mouse models of morbid or unusual conditions or diseases.

Determination of mutant phenotypes can be complicated by strain-associated conditions, by infectious agents, and by non-infectious environmental factors.

Infectious agents and environmental factors may manifest differently in different mouse strains and under the influence of different mutations. In addition, agents and factors whose impacts are not appreciated yet should be anticipated to emerge.

Anatomic and clinical pathology evaluations have important roles in functional genomics initiatives, especially to help to determine those phenotypes that really are attributable to the mutations of interest, and to continue to expose the influence of other factors on phenotype.

Examples of phenotypes and pathology related to background strains, infectious agents and other environmental factors will be presented and discussed.
